Selling Your Spanish Car When Returning to the UK

Moving back to Britain? Already returned home? You may not need to travel back to Spain just to sell your car.

Moving back to the UK can involve a long list of things to organise, from selling your Spanish property and cancelling utilities to arranging removals and sorting out your finances.

If you still have a Spanish registered car, deciding what to do with it can be another headache.

Perhaps your car is sitting outside your holiday home, parked at Alicante Airport or being looked after by a friend or neighbour.

You might even have already returned to the UK and be wondering how you can sell the vehicle without booking another flight to Spain.

The good news is that selling your Spanish car can often be arranged remotely.

At We Buy Your Spanish Car, we regularly help British customers sell their Spanish registered vehicles, including those who are returning to the UK or have already moved abroad.

We aim to make the process straightforward, secure and convenient, with clear communication, payment by bank transfer and the necessary ownership transfer paperwork handled on your behalf.

Can I Sell My Spanish Car Without Returning to Spain?

Yes, in many cases you can.

You do not necessarily need to be physically present in Spain to sell your Spanish registered vehicle.

Depending on your circumstances, we can arrange much of the selling process remotely.

This may include:

  • Discussing your vehicle and agreeing on a purchase price.
  • Reviewing the vehicle's documents and ownership information.
  • Preparing the necessary sales paperwork.
  • Arranging for documents to be signed remotely where legally acceptable.
  • Coordinating collection of the vehicle.
  • Making payment by bank transfer.
  • Handling the ownership transfer administration.

For example, if your vehicle is parked at Alicante Airport and you have already returned to the UK, we may be able to coordinate collection with the parking company, provided they have your permission and the necessary arrangements are in place.

Our aim is to save you the inconvenience and expense of returning to Spain solely to sell your car.

Please note that remote sales depend on having the appropriate identification, documentation and authorisations.

How Does the Process Work?

Step 1: Request Your Free Vehicle Valuation

Start by completing our online valuation form.

Tell us your vehicle's make, model, year, mileage, condition and location.

We may also request photographs and additional information about its service history or mechanical condition.

There is no obligation to accept our offer.

Step 2: Receive an Offer

Once we've reviewed your vehicle's details, we'll discuss its value and provide an offer based on its condition, market demand and any collection or preparation requirements.

We aim to be straightforward about our valuations so you know what to expect.

Step 3: Agree on the Sale and Paperwork

If you're happy with our offer, we'll explain the next steps and the documents required.

We prepare the necessary sales paperwork and explain how it can be completed.

If you're already in the UK, we'll discuss the available remote signing and authorisation options.

Step 4: Arrange Collection and Payment

We'll agree on a suitable collection arrangement based on the vehicle's location.

Depending on the circumstances, this could be from your Spanish property, a parking facility or another agreed location.

Payment is made by bank transfer, with the amount and payment arrangements confirmed as part of the sale.

We aim to make everything as convenient and transparent as possible.

Step 5: Ownership Transfer and Confirmation

Once the sale is completed, we arrange the necessary vehicle ownership transfer paperwork promptly.

We arrange our name transfers immediately as part of our purchase process and provide full documentary proof once the transfer has been completed.

Official DGT processing times may vary, but we keep customers informed throughout the process.

This means you're not simply handing over your vehicle and hoping the new owner eventually transfers it.

What If My Car Is Still in Spain?

Your car doesn't necessarily need to be moved before selling it.

We understand that many British customers leave their vehicles in Spain while they return home.

Your car might be:

  • Parked at your Spanish property.
  • Stored in a private garage.
  • Left with a friend or neighbour.
  • At Alicante Airport or Murcia Airport.
  • In a long-term parking facility.
  • At a holiday home that is being sold.

Depending on the vehicle's location, condition, accessibility and documentation, we may be able to arrange collection.

If your vehicle is being held by a third party, we will need the appropriate permission before collecting it.

Contact us with your vehicle's location and we'll explain the available options.

What Documents Do I Need?

The documents required can vary depending on your circumstances, but commonly include:

Permiso de Circulación

The Spanish vehicle registration certificate.

Ficha Técnica / Tarjeta ITV

The vehicle's technical inspection document.

Identification

Valid identification and the relevant NIE or NIF details where required.

Sales Agreement

A properly completed contract recording the vehicle's sale.

Additional Authorisation

If the vehicle is being sold or collected remotely, additional authorisation or supporting documentation may be required.

If any of your vehicle's documents are missing, please let us know before arranging the sale.

In some cases, replacement documents can be obtained, although this may involve additional administrative procedures.

What Happens to My SUMA Road Tax?

One of the most common questions we receive concerns Spanish road tax after selling a vehicle.

In Spain, annual vehicle road tax is called IVTM, often collected by SUMA in the Alicante area.

The person registered as the vehicle's owner on 1st January is normally responsible for that calendar year's road tax.

For example:

If you sell your car in October 2026, you remain responsible for the 2026 road tax.

If the vehicle is correctly transferred into the new owner's name before 1st January 2027, the new owner will normally be responsible for the 2027 road tax.

You would not normally need to notify SUMA separately simply because your vehicle has been sold and correctly transferred.

However, you should make sure any outstanding road tax has been paid before cancelling a direct debit.
