Spanish Road Tax (SUMA) Explained
Everything you need to know about road tax and ownership transfers when selling your Spanish registered car.
Selling a car in Spain can sometimes feel confusing, especially when it comes to SUMA road tax in Alicante province, ownership transfers and making sure you're no longer responsible for the vehicle.
At We Buy Your Spanish Car, we understand that our customers want complete peace of mind when selling their vehicles.
That's why we've created this straightforward guide answering the questions we are most frequently asked.
When you sell your vehicle to us, we handle the ownership transfer paperwork promptly and provide you with proof once the transfer has been completed.
You won't be left wondering whether the vehicle is still registered in your name.
Your SUMA questions, answered
Normally, no.
When your vehicle is correctly transferred through the Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT), the ownership records are updated and used by the relevant authorities for future road tax administration.
You would not normally need to contact SUMA separately just because you've sold your vehicle.
However, it's important to ensure the transfer has actually been completed.
When selling to We Buy Your Spanish Car, we handle the transfer process and provide proof of completion.
If you sell your car in December, you remain responsible for that year's road tax because you were the registered owner on 1st January.
However, provided the ownership transfer is completed before the following 1st January, the new registered owner will be responsible for the following year's tax.
For example, if you sell your car on 15th December 2026 and the transfer is completed before 1st January 2027, you are responsible for 2026, while the new owner is responsible for 2027.
This is one reason why completing the ownership transfer promptly is particularly important towards the end of the year.
Generally, no.
Spanish annual vehicle road tax is normally charged for the full calendar year.
If you sell your vehicle halfway through the year, you are not normally entitled to a proportional refund for the remaining months.
Refunds or proportional adjustments may be possible in certain legally recognised circumstances, such as permanent deregistration, but an ordinary vehicle sale does not normally qualify.
If you've returned to the UK after selling your Spanish registered car, you would not normally need to return to Spain simply to inform SUMA that the vehicle has been sold.
The important thing is that the vehicle's ownership transfer has been correctly completed and any outstanding tax obligations have been settled.
At We Buy Your Spanish Car, we regularly help customers who are leaving Spain or have already returned to the UK.
We aim to make the entire selling process straightforward, with clear communication, professional paperwork and proof of the completed ownership transfer.
You can check a vehicle's registered ownership information through the Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT).
The DGT offers vehicle reports that can help confirm the vehicle's administrative status and registered ownership details.
You can also request confirmation from the person or company responsible for completing the transfer.
At We Buy Your Spanish Car, we provide our customers with proof that the ownership transfer has been completed, so they don't have to rely on verbal assurances.
Although they are both involved in vehicle administration, they perform different roles.
SUMA: A tax collection organisation used by many local councils in Alicante to manage municipal taxes, including annual vehicle road tax.
DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico): Spain's national traffic authority, responsible for vehicle registration records, ownership transfers and other vehicle administration.
In simple terms, the DGT records who owns the vehicle, while SUMA collects road tax on behalf of participating local councils.
SUMA operates in Alicante province; other Spanish municipalities may use different collection authorities.
It depends on the circumstances.
A vehicle can sometimes be sold while a current year's road tax bill remains unpaid, provided that tax is not yet due or otherwise preventing the transfer.
However, unpaid road tax from previous years can cause problems with the ownership transfer.
We recommend checking and settling any overdue road tax before selling your vehicle.
If you're unsure about your vehicle's tax situation, please contact us and we can explain what documentation may be required.
Spanish vehicle road tax is known as IVTM.
The amount varies depending on the municipality where the vehicle is registered and the vehicle's fiscal horsepower or other applicable classification.
There is no single fixed annual road tax amount for every car in Spain.
Collection dates also vary depending on the local council and tax collection authority.
In Alicante, many municipalities use SUMA, which publishes its own annual payment calendar.
Remember that the payment collection date is different from the 1st January date used to determine who is responsible for that year's tax.
This can become a serious problem for the seller.
If the buyer fails to complete the ownership transfer, the vehicle may remain registered in the seller's name.
This can create complications involving future road tax bills, traffic fines and other administrative matters.
When selling privately, sellers should make sure the appropriate DGT sale notification is submitted promptly and retain the sales agreement and supporting documents.
This is one of the biggest advantages of selling directly to We Buy Your Spanish Car.
We arrange the ownership transfer promptly and professionally, and provide documentation once it is officially completed. Official processing times may vary.
You won't have to chase a private buyer or simply trust that they'll eventually change the vehicle into their name.
If you've sold your car and no longer need the direct debit for that vehicle, you can arrange for it to be cancelled.
However, before doing so, make sure you have paid any outstanding road tax.
Cancelling a direct debit does not remove an existing tax obligation.
If you were the registered owner on 1st January, you are normally responsible for that year's tax even if the vehicle is sold before payment is collected.
If your direct debit covers other taxes or properties, check carefully before cancelling it.
